World Famous Peppermint Lounge

The Peppermint Lounge was a gay discotheque on 45th St. in NYC. It received its fame from the Twist craze in the early 60's. Celebrities swarmed the lounge to dance to the house band, Joey Dee & The Starliters. Wanting to capitalize on the Twist craze and the club they performed in, Joey Dee and Henry Glover wrote The Peppermint Twist and it charted at #1 in 1962 replacing Chubby Checker's Twist. Various Starliters included Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish, and Felix Cavaliere (three-quarters of what became The Young Rascals), as well as Jimmy Hendrix and Joe Pesci. Other artists who performed at the lounge include The Beach Boys, The Ronettes(who made their professional debut here in 1961), The Crystals, The Isley Brothers, Chubby Checker and The Four Seasons. The club closed in 1965 when it lost its liquor license. This was originally posted on June 13, 2013.
